CBD 101 for Pet Parents: Introducing Hemp Elements Plus™

• 4 min read

Everyone wants the best for their family. And that includes the furry members of your troop, too! So, it’s no wonder that there’s been so much interest in finding new ways to help keep our pets feeling their Zesty best. We feel the same way here at Zesty Paws®.

That’s why we’re so delighted to have formed a partnership with CBDistillery™, a Colorado-based company that specializes in high-quality, fairly priced, U.S. grown, hemp-derived CBD products. And together, we’re bringing premium plant-based cannabinoids to your pets.

You and your dog already love our soft chew bites. So, we’ve combined the best of our tasty functional bites with the goodness of CBD to create our new dog functional supplement line: Hemp Elements Plus™! These products contain 225 mg of CBD per bag – the most in the market!

Dr. Lindsay Butzer, DVM and Zesty Paws® spokesperson, recently talked about this exciting new partnership and the benefits that come from Zesty Paws® Hemp Elements Plus™ line of soft chews with CBD.

“When added as a supplement to your pet’s daily routine, you may notice that your pet has a little more pep in their step and is even eager to go on longer walks,” Butzer said.

    CBD 101

Cannabidiol (or CBD) is one of 120+ naturally occurring phytocannabinoids that is found in the hemp plant.

Hemp is NOT marijuana, but they do both come from the same green, leafy plant: Cannabis sativa L. The difference is the amount of a substance called delta-9-tetrahyrocannabinol (more commonly known as THC). THC is the intoxicating substance in marijuana.

The difference is that hemp contains no more than 0.3% THC on a dry weight basis and any plant with > 0.3% THC on a dry weight basis is then considered to be marijuana.

And all CBD products manufactured by CBDistillery™ are derived from hemp crops grown in the USA.

    What is CBD?

Cannabidiol (or CBD) is one of 120+ naturally occurring phytocannabinoids that is found in the hemp plant.

Here’s the science behind it: Humans and dogs have something called an Endocannabinoid System (ECS) that’s made up of receptors on cell membranes that may regulate a number of processes. The ECS has cannabinoid receptors, and CBD binds with those receptors and may help act on those processes.

Every Hemp Elements Plus™ bite has 5 mg of Plant-Based Cannabinoids from Broad Spectrum Hemp – and it’s made in the USA from US and Globally Sourced Ingredients.

And just like all of our products, these carry the NASC logo, reflecting our company’s NASC certification.

    Does CBD help dogs?

There’s promising research that it may. As recently as in September 2020, a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled study[i] by the Baylor College of Medicine found that daily cannabidiol may help dogs maintain mobility.*

The study, published in the journal PAIN, revealed that dogs who took CBD were able to move more than dogs that did not. Further research revealed that CBD was addressing the source, rather than just masking symptoms.*

Dr. Butzer agrees that supplements like Zesty Paws® Hemp Elements Plus™ soft chews with plant-based cannabinoids can be beneficial to your dog in several ways.

“Products like Hemp Elements Plus™ Mobility Bites™ may help maintain the health and resiliency of joint and connective tissue to promote your dog’s mobility,” Butzer said. “And ingredients like the Ashwagandha in Hemp Elements™ Plus Cognitive Bites™ can help promote focus and clarity – something great for older dogs.”
